Hannah's Story
When a family is expecting a baby they never imagine that she won't be healthy and perfect. But when Hannah was still two months away from entering the world, her parents discovered that her heart wasn't beating properly. To remedy this she received a pacemaker shortly after she was born, and by her 7 month birthday her mom, Lynda, affectionately says she was a "big, fat, roly-poly baby." Unfortunately, Hannah wasn't out of danger. A few months shy of her first birthday she developed cardiomyopathy, a dangerously enlarged heart. From that point forward, Lynda described Hannah's world as one of thirds...she had a "1/3 chance of dying, a 1/3 chance that the irregularity would reverse itself and a 1/3 chance of needing a heart transplant." Hannah's condition continued to get worse and before long she was admitted to the intensive care unit and placed on the list to receive a new heart. |

Today Hannah is six years old and has had her new heart for five years. "She's my little warrior," says her mom. "Chris and I plan for her future, because we see one for her. We live with the possibility that she will need another heart transplant, but we know that science works, so it's not so scary." In 2007, LifeNet Health celebrated it 25th anniversary. Hannah, her mom and grandma were part of the festivities. In LifeNet Health's 25 year history, we have saved more than 5,500 lives and helped restore health to 1.5 million people. |
